Data Never Sleeps

I saw this infographic the other day, displaying a breakdown of the surreal amount of data generated every minute across the world.

Over 2 million searches on Google.

Over 680,000 pieces of shared content on Facebook.

Over 47,000 app downloads from Apple.

And this is every minute! When I looked through the various categories, two things immediately caught my attention.

First, and most obviously, there is clearly an information-sharing pandemic sweeping the world. Cities, states, and countries are becoming connected at an extraordinary rate. A hundred years ago, a single voice could only be carried as far as the local paperboy could walk. Today we can communicate and interact instantaneously with any of the other 2 billion global internet voices across the planet.

Second, I noticed that just about every figure in this visual is encouraging from a mobile standpoint. All of these activities are already trending to mobile devices, and the scope of this world view only goes to show how much growth this trend still has.

These numbers have inspired me to look into our own holistic mobile figures. Albeit our niche business model doesn’t (yet) reach 2.1 billion people, AVAI Mobile Solutions has some fairly impressive statistics too.

• Nearly 200 Applications Developed – This accounts for iOS, Android, and BlackBerry platforms. We also have mobile websites, not included in this count!
• Over 1,500,000 App Users – This is the number of downloads we have had to our apps.
• Almost 8,000,000 App Sessions – This is the number of times our apps have been launched / opened. Again, this does not include mobile websites.
• Median Session Length of 1.5 minutes – Median time spent per use in our applications among all end users
• 8,000,000 Sessions x 1.5 min/session = 12,000,000 min of usage
  (Or 200,000 hours / 8,333.33 days / almost 23 years of session time)

Supply and demand come to mind. This infographic illustrates that the world-wide market clearly has a demand for information sharing. And if you layer this data with trends in mobility, it is no surprise that the AVAI Mobile figures are also trending so auspiciously.
