Just before Microsoft’s announcement, the International Data Corporation gave a forecast on tablet shipments worldwide through 2016. The predicted rise is staggering, from 19.4 million in 2010 to a predicted 222.1 million by 2016. This forecast doesn’t take into account the surface tablet by Microsoft, and the IDC adds that “based upon early pricing expectations for these products, [the] Windows-based tablets will be largely additive to our existing media tablet market forecast. We don’t expect Windows-based tablets to necessarily take share from Apple and Android, but will grow the overall tablet market.”
