Here’s an interesting infographic illustrating some of the costs consumers are investing into the new iPhone 5. It’s clear mobile users are willing to invest heavily to enjoy the benefits new mobile technology brings.

One thing to notice in this infographic is the information on app costs. As stated, the current average app price is $1.92. In the past year, 30% of iPhone users spent $0 on iPhone apps, followed by 17% spending $1-$5 dollars, 12% spending $6-$10, and 13% spending $11-$20. Also important, iPhone users spend 55% of their device time on apps. And now, with the introduction of the iPhone 5, it will be interesting to see how much more users will be willing to invest.

Enough with the rumors, Apple has finally spoken. Since this time last year the global media has been in a whirl, awaiting the announcement of the next iPhone. Memorably, a year ago, Apple built anticipation around the next iPhone, only to anticlimactically reveal the iPhone 4S. So with even more pressure mounting, and continued speculation of the next iPhone, notoriously tight-lipped Apple released the following:

You don’t have to cross your eyes and stare at this picture for 15 minutes to see the large shadow of a “5” lurking under the September 12th event invitation.

So get ready, after more gossip than a daytime television drama series, we’re finally ready to see it; the iPhone 5. Expect to see a:

Larger, more slender screen

Slightly thinner design

Minimized dock connector

High-speed LTE connection

iOS 6 Software

If you’re one for the gossip, don’t worry; Apple still leaves plenty for the imagination. While the iPhone will be the headliner, there is speculation if at this event Apple will also reveal a new line of iPods, or possibly an iPad Mini design. The latter, while unlikely to be unveiled at this event, has generated its own fair-share of buzz. Steve Jobs notably criticized the idea of a 7 inch tablet, saying that it would be “dead on arrival.” However the market has spoken and supposition is through the roof.

No matter to the extent ALL our questions are answered, the September 12th Apple event promises to deliver on the hype… finally.

Apple has kept their secrets close, divulging very little about how their products are planned and developed. Anyone savvy to business understands why this must occur for Apple to maintain a sustainable comparative advantage. But in the heat of the Apple vs. Samsung patent lawsuit, some new information has come to light about the internal operations of this super-genius. Follows are a few new insights that the trial has revealed thus far:

1. Marketing

iPhone, iPad marketing spending exceeded $1 Billion

Apple constantly surveys its customers on ‘likes’ and ‘dislikes’

Apple actively does forecasting, showing they are sensitive to competitors

2. Design Process

There are 16 Industrial Designers that meet to formulate a design

Every designer is responsible for, and works on all active projects

Jony Ive, Apple’s SVP of Industrial Design, assigned a designer to develop a model of what an iPhone would look like if Sony created one

Early iPads had a kickstand

Early iPhone design mirrored today’s iPhone 5

3. Engineering

The iPhone software team borrowed developers from other projects, rather than acquire external help

iPhone development was called “Project Purple,” developed in secure location called “Purple Dorm”

Steve Jobs was open to a 7” iPad back in January of 2011

If you haven’t caught the latest on Apple’s new operating system features, read on for the breakdown. If you are already aware of the updates, I encourage you to begin thinking beyond the new features, the fancy devices, and start to see the bigger picture of a world on-the-go. “Mobile Strategy” is a phrase that is quickly and overwhelmingly rolling off the tongue in almost every business setting. Small business owners are extending their reach through mobile promotion. Large corporations are streamlining their services through mobile. Associations are driving membership through mobile connections. Art institutions are extending their influence and recognition through mobile campaigns. Campuses are enhancing security and promoting a healthy atmosphere with mobile technology. The challenge to the working class is to look at the mobile resources we have at our disposal, and use them to further our reach, productivity, and overall influence.

But back to iOS6…

Available on:

iPhone 3GS and later

iPad 2 and later

4th gen iPod touch and later

New features:

Upgraded Siri is now able to:

Find sports scores, stats, etc.

Get restaurant recommendations Yelp/Open Table integration

Get movie info from Rotten Tomatoes integration

Launch apps

Update social networks

Function on the “new iPad” (3rd generation iPad)

Mapping

Apple to replace Google Maps with their own turn-by-turn navigation and 3D flyover mapping. *Noted Issue: Developers are currently reporting bad map coverage in places (particularly non-US countries) in the beta preview, but data collection is still ongoing.

Other

Facebook, like Twitter, is now fully integrated into the OS

Passbook – a ticket/giftcard organizing app which 3rd party apps can take advantage of

Users are immediately notified when an app is attempting to access Calendars, Reminders, Contacts, and Photos

Built in ability to receive government alerts during an emergency or disaster

New mode: Do not disturb

Face-Time without Wi-fi

Accessibility updates

Pull-to-refresh mail update

This summer is proving to be quite the breeding ground for a full-on mobile war. Apple is releasing a feature-heavy OS and likely the iPhone 5; Microsoft is entering the tablet market; BlackBerry 10 is in the works for release during Q4; there is even a concept for a Facebook phone. We all have our points of criticism on specific devices and operating systems, but we can’t ignore the bigger picture. As the devices themselves are harboring more advanced features, we will see a whole new set of possibilities in application development and content management. So, remember to think bigger and better as we continue to see these roll-outs.

A lot can be said for the innovation mobile devices have brought to the world. And if you do a quick search, you’ll find that a lot IS already said. While facts and figures are nice, who is actually doing the talking? As ‘mobile’ increasingly becomes a critical piece of marketing, it’s important to gauge what exactly end-users have to say.

The Pew Internet Project recently surveyed smartphone owners, asking users “to provide the one word that best describes how they feel about their phones.” And from this data, in an equally trendy manner, the Pew Internet Project released the following infographic.

The full report can be found here

There is a scope of opinion here, but this visual definitely gives the current temperate of the general smartphone-using market. Don’t forget, these are their words!
